Washing a printed shirt without wrecking the print

A print fails from heat and friction rather than from washing. Four habits that keep a printed garment looking new for years.

Prints rarely fail because of soap. They fail from heat and from rubbing, both of which are easy to avoid once you know that is what does it.

The four that matter

  1. Turn it inside out. The print then rubs against the shirt rather than against the drum and everything else in the load.
  2. Wash cool. Cold or thirty degrees. Heat is what softens a print and lets it crack.
  3. Skip the tumble dryer. Drying is hotter than washing, and it is the single fastest way to age a print.
  4. Do not iron the print. Iron around it, or iron the shirt inside out.

The first wash

A new printed garment is at its most vulnerable in the first few washes while the ink finishes curing into the fabric. Being careful early buys years later.

What normal wear looks like

A print will soften slightly over time and settle into the fabric. That is the ink becoming part of the shirt rather than sitting on top of it, and it is not a fault. Cracking, flaking or lifting at the edges is different, and usually points to heat.

This applies to any printed garment, not only ones bought here. The same four habits work on anything with ink on it.

Children's shirts

Wash more often and hotter is the instinct, and it is the thing that kills a favourite shirt. Cool and inside out still gets a child's shirt clean, and keeps the name readable for the next two years of wearing it.

Detergent and softener

Ordinary detergent is fine. Fabric softener is the one to avoid, because it works by coating fibres, and a coated fibre holds ink less well over time. Bleach obviously has no place near a printed garment, including the oxygen kind that is marketed as colour safe.

Storing it

Folding along the same line repeatedly puts a crease through the print and eventually cracks it there. Hanging avoids it entirely, and if a drawer is the only option, folding it a different way occasionally is enough.
